What is the meaning of organic? To those of us who have taken the time to really understand what we are eating, there can be no doubt that the term “organic” has many varied meanings. Some people call it nature’s way of giving us food and other things; others think of it as the basis of how certain plants grow and some consider it to be a form of slavery or of life without the use of man-made chemicals.
In actuality, there is no definite definition of organic. The most common definition of the word is that of a living thing that contains no artificial substances in it. However, this definition does not define what an organic food product should taste like, smell like or even be used for. Many people think of organic foods as tasting better than non-organic; but then there are those of us who do not believe that anything less than organically grown produce is acceptable.
If you were to talk to most consumers at large, you would learn that they do have an opinion about what the meaning of organic is and what it should mean for them. This is not surprising since the concept of the word organic and the concept of life itself is so broad that it actually encompasses a very wide range of views, from those who believe that it is important to be as natural as possible to those who view organic as the foundation for the quality of the food that we eat. Of course, there are many in between those two extremes.
There is no doubt that consumers do care about what their food is and how it was grown, stored and manufactured. That being said, many of them also believe that it is important to treat food as though it were organic. They want to know that pesticides and other chemicals were not used and that the soil where their food was grown did not contain any synthetic materials. Therefore, the definition of organic can be somewhat vague.
Some would say that the meaning of organic can be considered to be a way of life. For example, the Biodiversity Institute in Britain defines organic as “the practice and science of creating and maintaining a delicate balance among the different species of plants and animals that compose a part of our organic ecosystem.” In other words, what is the meaning of organic may be something very different than what a consumer might think. The same is true with respect to land management and the use of chemicals on a farm or in a factory.
It is also important to realize that the meaning of organic is not simply applied to human foods. Even in this day and age, many people argue against the idea of organics in general. They feel that it is okay for animals to be fed antibiotics and steroids as long as it is only used on a temporary basis. As for organically produced foods, they feel that humans should not interfere with nature. After all, nature provides these foods and animals with what they need to survive and thrive.
The meaning of organic has also been used to describe non-natural foods, particularly those that are grown or produced in a very unnatural way. These are typically referred to as “non-organic”. This term can encompass any products that are not clearly labeled as being natural, even if the packaging claims otherwise. For example, certain foods can be labeled as “Certified Organic” even though they are grown with little or no outside help.
The meaning of organic may be very different than what people think. For instance, certified organic gardening may require using products that have been approved by an external agency. In this way, the use of chemicals and pesticides is limited, although they may not be entirely absent. By paying attention to the way that the word is used, it is possible to determine whether or not organic gardening is right for you.
